Sekac Leads @YTownPhantoms Alums PLUS Walker's Big Impact

Sekac: Opening Day Canadien

In case you were wondering where some of the alumni of the Youngstown Phantoms were ending up, here is what we've learned from the Phantoms:

Jiri Sekac: Sekac was signed to an entry level deal by the Montreal Canadiens in July and, by all indications has impressed the team and the local media. To that end, the 2009-11 Phantoms forward has made the Canadiens' opening day roster.

Sekac had spent three years in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League - a semi-direct competitor to the NHL - honing his skills.

The team, particularly fellow Czech Tomas Plekanec, have taken a liking to the young player who will wear the number 26.

Scott Mayfield: Mayfield, who played in Youngstown during the 2009-10 season, will be on the roster for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL. He finished the 2013-14 season as a New York Islander, playing the final 5 games of the NHL team's season. As a Sound Tiger, he is likely to get another opportunity with the Islanders at some point during 2014-15.

Nathan Walker: The Australian forward that was a Phantom in 2012-13 remains a prospect of the Washington Capitals but will start the season with their AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears. In 2013-14, Walker posted 5 goals, 6 assists over 43 games.

And, of course, he performed this beauty during a Capitals/Sabres preseason game :

Tom Serratore: Serratore has been invited to a tryout by the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL. That team is connected to the Detroit Red Wings organization.

Last season, he recieved a professional tryout with the Philadelphia Flyer affiliate Adirondack Phantoms, also of the AHL. In 4 games with those Phantoms, he scored a goal. As a Youngstown Phantom, Serratore scored 17 goals and 15 assists in 52 games during the 2009-10 season, his only season with the team.

Others: Jefferson Dahl is playing in Germany (EHC Klostersee). Danny Mattson is a member of Boras HC in Sweden. 35 Alumni players are actively playing in 22 different NCAA Division I programs.
