Ryan Lomberg: Phantoms' New Risky Acquisition

The Youngstown Phantoms have acquired Forward Ryan Lomberg from the Lincoln Stars.

Lomberg, a native of Richmond Hill, Ontario never played a game for the Stars, spending the last two seasons at the University of Maine. At UMaine, Lomberg excelled in on-ice production, becoming the team's third highest goal-scorer in his sophomore year, lighting the lamp 11 times in 34 games.

His 56 game, 32-point career with U Maine has likely ended, however, following assault charges stemming from an altercation over the summer which landed him an "indefinite suspension" from Maine head coach Red Gendron. On Tuesday, Lomberg, through an attorney, plead guilty to disorderly conduct charges in that case and received a fine and will pay restitution as a result. Lomberg's fiery demeanor has also appeared on the ice as Hockey East suspended the UMaine forward for a game in February following an elbowing infraction, as reported by Jeff Cox of SBN College Hockey.

The Phantoms will give up a total of three draft picks for his services. Lincoln will receive Youngstown's Phase I 3rd round and Phase II 2nd round 2015 picks as well as a 2016 Phase II 6th round selection. Each of those picks are "conditional" per the Youngstown Phantoms and the official USHL Hockey Operations twitter feed.

Lincoln acquired Lomberg's rights from the Muskegon Lumberjacks who drafted him as the sixth overall pick in 2011. Lomberg's decision to play in the USHL made waves at the time, as in doing so, he shunned the OHL to come to the United States' premier junior league.

Given his recent off-ice issues, Lomberg represents a bold gamble by the Phantoms. However, Lomberg offers a ton of potential offensive upside, which if he is able to grow past his mistakes could pay huge dividends for the team.
